#PBandJterm Top Ten

10. Getting to Know New People

I really enjoyed getting to know all of the people in #pbandjterm. Everyone in the #pbandjterm class enriched it in their own way. I also enjoyed reconnecting with the people I already knew. I enjoyed furthering connections with people within the same school (The School of Communications) and people from other schools as well.

9. Scott Stratten

The Google Hangout with Scott Stratten was so amazing. It just proved how important social media is. Michael gave his presentation and we were tweeting, including Scott’s twitter handle, he started tweeting back and then wanted to Skype. He told our class a lot about how he has created and managed his online personal brand. Scott went above and beyond the expectation I had for him. He definitely is a brand you should know.

8. Marisa Lather

Marisa Lather was a great guest speaker. She talked a lot about social media management. She explained the what to do’s and the what not to do’s of social media when concerning creating and managing your online personal brand. Of course she talked about all of the typical don’t of social media but she also introduced a few good points on how to better manage social media, many of which I had never thought of. She left us with a good rule: “If you can’t explain it to Grandma, don’t post it.”

7. Jess Leitch

Jess Leitch the LU alum and #pbandjterm graduate. Jess was really inspiring because she was so related. The fact that she is close to my age, went to LU (not to mention she took Jill’s #pbandjterm), has a popular personal brand, and she is known throughout St. Louis. Jess’ “City in A Jar” blog is a lifestyle blog that focuses mostly on fashion. It really reminded me of Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City”. And anything that reminds me of one of my favorite shows of all time is great in my book.

6. Having a blast laughing our asses off

#Pbandjterm was filled with so much laughter, much of which was rooted with Jae (thanks for fixing my computer) and Andrew (you know what I’m saying). I really enjoyed going to class because I knew it would be a good time. I laughed so much at people hilarious presentation, memes, tweets, and just the funny people in the class.

5. Switch Field Trip

Let me start this off by saying I haven’t been on a field trip in YEARS, probably elementary school was the last time and this was the best field trip hands down. It was great to see a company who created content for very popular brands, such as Budweiser. I really enjoyed the tour of the all-inclusive Switch facility. Andrew explained a lot of things. I was so inspired I’m seriously considering applying for an internship there.

4. Jenn Cloud

I loved Jenn! Jenn was so relatable, fun, and inspiring. My favorite thing about Jenn is that she tweeted back to me. She also read my blog post about her and commented on it. I just really appreciate the fact that she appreciates her followers. It made me feel like she was genuine inspiration and that she really loves doing what she does. She inspired me in more ways than one. She inspired me to try for the spokester gig at Vantage Credit Union. She showed me the correct way to treat my followers, if I ever get any.

3. Acclamation to Twitter

I had a twitter account before #pbandjterm however I didn’t really understand how it worked to well. And honestly I didn’t particularly care for it. I think I had maybe 2 dozen tweets and now I have almost 300. I understand that twitter is a really important tool in creating a personal brand online. It is place where I can obtain a following base and mass share the content that I create. I am in love with Twitter now.

2. Learning How to Build My Brand

Between Jill grilling us and the guest speakers and twitter and wordpress and the field trip I fully understand why it is important to have an online personal brand. I am now working towards pushing the brand I have created out there. I actually enjoy blogging which is kind of surprising. I hadn’t really ever thought that it would be something that I would enjoy, but I do. Now next semester when Jill makes me blog all the time, I’ll probably regret that sentence but for now it’s something I enjoy and plan on continuing (even though it’s not for class credit).

1. Social Media

I got to blow up social media for three weeks for class credit. Tweeting was my homework. I got to be on pinterest in class for class credit. I got to dive into pinterest for homework. Best. Assignments. Ever.

LUTV: An Introduction

Meet LUTV

I attend Lindenwood University. LU has it’s own television station/channel. LUTV is the higher education cable channel for St. Charles County. It can be viewed via Charter Cable in (St. Charles County), AT&T U-verse (throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area, and a live stream online. LUTV can be found on channel 989 on Charter digital cable turner. On QAM tuners at frequency 106. On AT&T U-verse at channel 99.

lutv logo

Mission Statement

The primary mission of LUTV is to provide the community with educational and cultural programming covering many diverse topics. The secondary mission of LUTV is to provide a learning environment for students. All of the shows broadcast on the channel have a high degree of student involvement. LUTV gives student hands-on situations that greatly help them in their future career.

camera crew

What’s on LUTV

LUTV has many different things on its channel. Everything from speaker series (an event that student can attend in which LU gets a speaker to come to speak directly to the students), to sporting events (football, basketball, soccer, and more), to Public Service Announcements, to LUTV News.

brittany and brian

LUTV News

LUTV News like a typical news broadcast. It has news, sports, weather, and much more. It covers university, local, state, regional, national, and international news stories. The news stories in the past have ranged from the Blanchette Bridge Repair, to the Lindenwood  HIV scandal, to state governmental news. Sports stories include Lindenwood sports, Cardinals baseball stats, St. Charles Chill stats, and many others. There are also packages in the show that cover a variety of topics. Packages are a news segment completed in the field (not in the studio) by a reporter. Packages in the past have covered a boxing night at Ameristar Casino, the soccer match up in Busch Stadium, craft beer making at local breweries, and many more.

TV News

LUTV is where my passion lies. I want to be involved with TV news after I graduate, whether that be behind the scenes, reporting , or anchoring. I really like the importance of being involved with the news. The community needs to know important information that influences their lives and I want to be part of delivering it.

Floor Directing

In the past I have been a few different positions for LUTV News. My favorite and most frequented position was floor directing. Floor directing can be very hard, stressful, and fast paced. But it is also fun, important, and rewarding. The floor director is the director’s eyes, ears, mouth, and hands on the floor on the studio. The floor director basically runs the show for the director. The floor director is stationed on inside the studio so he/she can help out the camera crew and talent. The floor director has a sheet called the run-down, which basically has all of the important and necessary elements of a show crammed into one sheet. This sheets lets the floor director know what is going on and who needs to be doing what. I like floor directing for a variety of reasons. The foremost reason why I enjoyed floor directing because it was important, I was needed to make the show run smoothly. People relied on me to get the job done.

floor directing

Camera Work

I have also done a little camera work for LUTV. I was a camera operator during the news and I have also been a camera operator for shooting elements in the field that is needed for the show. I shoot stuff for the weather and packages. I liked shooting weather because I got to be creative with nature. I really enjoyed seeing something as simple as a tree and turning it into an interesting shot worthy of being on the news. I would find myself walking across campus and looking up and thinking “Wow, that would be a great shot for weather!”

Excitement

I am excited for my new adventure in Mass Communications and LUTV. Next semester (Spring of 2014) I’m taking a class called super semester. In super semester, students further their knowledge in the TV and News aspect of Broadcast Communications. They learned newswriting, reporting, anchoring, and much more. I am so excited, it hurts! I am excited to report for LUTV. I am excited to anchor for LUTV. I am excited to learn so much that it will make my head spin.

See Ya Later

Until the next adventure in Mass Communications…..maybe you’ll see me on LUTV News.

Marisa Lather: Revamping your Online Personal Brand

Meet Marisa

Marisa Lather is definitely someone who knows about the field of social media. Marisa visited by #pbandjterm class to discuss do’s and don’ts concerning social media when trying to develop and manage your online personal brand.

glasses marisa

About Marisa
Marisa describes herself as a lover of music, social media, and fashion. She is blogging about the above things and trying to educate people in social media. Marisa is knowledgeable because of what she does. Marisa is a freelance social media manager for a few different clients in St. Louis. Marisa microblogs on many different social media platforms, she also has a few different profiles on each platform. Marisa is the marketing director at a company called Microgrid Solar.

Microgrid Solar
Microgrid Solar is the leading Midwest solar integrator providing custom energy management service to residential and commercial clients. This company is based in the Midwest, but is expanding currently.

Digital Integrity in Personal Branding
Marisa titled her presentation Digital Integrity in Personal Branding. This presentation taught me a lot about managing my personal brand with integrity and intelligence.
Marisa taught me that I need to build my online portfolio (social media presence or online personal brand). I need a good username. Check. A well written bio. Check. Website to attach. Check. Professional headshot. I don’t have a professional headshot but I like the photographs I’ve been using. I feel like the ones I’m using are professional, positive, and connect to my career. Also I need to add my name in the title of appropriate pictures on social media so in comes up when I’m searched.

marisa hat

What Not to Post
Marisa also taught me what not to post. Don’t post provocative photographs, anything concerning drinking and drugs, or illegal behavior. Don’t badmouth previous employers, or anyone in general. Don’t post discriminatory comments or photos. Don’t lie about qualifications and don’t contradict qualifications. Don’t post anything that would be considered inappropriate behavior.

What to Post

Marisa taught me what to post. Post about any awards and/or accolades. Post about any accomplishments. Post about any special skills. Post about any volunteer opportunities you participate in. Post about any appropriate situation. Post anything that shows you have a well-rounded personality and interests. Post about industry related things, no matter what industry you are currently in.

marisa business

There’s no Shame in Googling Yourself
The fourth thing Marisa taught me to google search yourself. This allows you to find things that you don’t want to be found. This also allows you to take actions to get rid of things that you don’t want to be conveyed in your online personal brand. Because if you can google search yourself and find something you don’t like, so can anyone else (a future employer, a future client, even the president).

google logo

The Grandma Rule
The fifth thing that Marisa taught me is a good rule to live by, online that is. “If it can’t be explained to your grandma, don’t post it.” Another way to look at it is if you don’t want grandma to see or read what you’re posting, DON’T.

grandma keg stand meme

Double Dipping
Marisa has two accounts on most social media platforms. For instance, Facebook. On Facebook, she has an account for “friends”. She also has an account her “work”. The “friends” account is a typical account that has fun posts about Marisa’s though. The “work” account is a highly regulated account, in which her online personal brand is maintained. She posts about work related things. She also has a work twitter and a friends twitter.

#PBandJterm
To conclude, Marisa ties into my #pbandjterm class because she has an online personal brand. Marisa is also very well versed in managing an online personal brand via many different social media outlets.

89.1 The Wood Introduction

LU’s Radio Stations

I attend Lindenwood University. LU has two radio stations. Those radio stations are KCLC. The first station is KCLC HD2, the Experience. It plays classic rock. The second station, which is my station is KCLC, 89.1 the Wood, the Smart Mix. Let me just say I absolutely love doing radio. By doing radio I mean deejaying.

891_logo

Work and Learn: KCLC

LU has this program called work and learn. Work and learn is a work study program, in which students can work at the university and get paid for it. I don’t get a check every month like normal jobs but the money is just taken off what I owe for tuition. I’m getting paid to do something that I am passionate for. It doesn’t even feel like work.

dj picture

Back to Your Regular Programming

89.1 The Wood, the Smart Mix plays music of the album adult alternative genre. This includes artists such as Adele,John Mayerthe Bare-naked Ladies, and many more.

AAA (not the car service)

I wasn’t really interested in album adult alternative music until I started deejaying for 89.1 the Wood. However now I really like a lot of the music that is played. I discovered several artists that I hadn’t heard of before and they have become my new favorites. For example, the Bare-naked Ladies have a new song called “Odds Are” and I absolutely love it. It is very catchy and positive. It talks about how things are going to be alright. The chorus goes “Odds are we’re gonna be alright, odds are we’re gonna be alright for another night.” I have turned a new happiness leaf. I am really happy now and I try to stay positive with keep calm. This song personifies that.

89.1

The station is mostly music. WE HAVE NO COMMERICALS.      When there is a break in regular programming (music) it is only for short periods. The deejaying will stop the music to tell the stats of a song; the artist and song title. The deejay will also give a short weather forecast every 20 minutes. Also at the top of the hour the deejay will do a news segment that includes a syndicated news broadcast (a 3 minute clip of news that is recorded by the broadcast journalists of AP Radio News and is then sent to 89.1), a local news segment, Public Service Announcement, and a business and sports news update.

Until Next Time…

I usually am on air for about 5 hours a week, sometimes more. I would love to speak to you over the airwaves and then get your feedback. Listen and tell me what you think I can do better. Until the next Mass Communications Adventure update….

Jess Leitch: Inspiring Success Story

Making It

I’m really scared that I won’t be able to make it after graduation. I mean like make it in the career aspect, like a career that is in my degree field. Then I listen to someone like Jess Leitch speak.

jess laughing

Meet Jess Leitch

Jess Leitch is a blogger Jess also attended Lindenwood University and took Jill’s #pbandjterm class. Jess is kinda a big deal in St. Louis. Jess describes herself as a writer, a list maker, an expert car dancer, a lover of red lipstick with a penchant for baking pies. Jess is big into fashion.

Similarities

Wow, I thought. We have things in common. However one big thing that we don’t have in common is the fact the people actually read her blog, mine however isn’t being read by anyone (other than my professors). Also people in St. Louis know her. Not a whole lot of people know me.

jess polka dots

Alive Magazine

Anyway, back to Jess. Jess works at Alive Magazine. Alive Magazine can be described as St. Louis’ premier lifestyle magazine focused on all things fashion, culture, and entertainment!

SCM STL

Jess also works with the Social Media Club in St. Louis. The Social Media Club hosts events (usually something that is Happy Hour like) in which people for the same professional demographic can get together and network.

scmstl logo

I Learned…

I learned so much about life and career stuff from Jess. First thing is content; creating it is the easiest thing and the hardest thing. When the content is something you love and are super interesting to write about it: it’s easy. When the content is something you aren’t passionate about and don’t care to write about it’s hard. Jess said (about thinking about content for her blog) “I like to bake cakes. I can talk about it online.” The second thing is the you can’t give up when you don’t see result quickly. It takes time to get followers and readers. You can’t give up because one day somebody will read your blog and love it and be inspired by it. So keep blogging! The third thing about blogging is that you have to keep up with it. If someone tweets you at 2 am you need to reply to it as soon as possible. So for example, if Carrie Underwood tweets you, you need to tweet back ASAP! And don’t just respond to Carrie Underwood, respond to everyone. The fourth thing I learned was that we just need to say yes. Say yes to that new food. Say yes to that new dress. Say yes to a new experience. Say yes! We experience new and exciting things by saying yes. So say yes today. The fifth thing about blogging is staying current. Read things. Pay attention to what is trending. Pay attention to what is in style. Pay attention to big news. Pay attention to current events. Pay attention to what everyone is talking about.

jess beach

#pbandjterm

Jess relates to #pbandjterm because she took the class. Not only did she take the class, she applied it to her life. Jess is the #pbandjterm success story. One day I hope to be another #pbandjterm success story.

jess smiling

So Can I

To conclude, I learned a lot from Jess. She was really informative and inspiring. I really liked that she is a former LU student and #pbandjterm student. I like that she isn’t much older than I am. It just proves to me that if she can do it, so can I.

Guest Speaker: Jenn Cloud

Who is Jenn Cloud?

jenn cloud

I got the wonderful opportunity to listen to Jenn Cloud speak. Well who is Jenn Cloud, you might ask? Jenn describes herself was a web geek, video producer, and marketing freelancer located in the greater Saint Louis area. I think she needs to add inspirational speaker to the list as well.

HMM and VCU

Jenn is in the process of developing her own company. This company will be called Homage Marketing and Media. Jenn has gained experience in both media and marketing from being a spokester for Vantage Credit Union. Vantage Credit Union is a progressive, full-service financial institution that’s owned and guided by our member-owners-people just like me and you-and not by stockholders like at a publicly-traded bank. Jenn was part of the Young and Free team. The Young and Free team is meant to help people age 18-25 with all of the financial and banking things that are hard to understand. Vantage Credit Union helps out with savings accounts, checking accounts, auto loans (and other loans), and mortgages.

jenn thumbs

Spokester Inspiration

Jenn’s involvement being a spokester for Vantage Credit Union really inspiring me to apply for a position after I graduate. Since I’m a Mass Communications major with an emphasis in Broadcast, I feel like this would be a position that would fit me perfectly. I love making videos. I enjoy social media and blogging. I have always enjoyed math and banking. I think it would be beneficial because being a spokester would promote my online personal brand. It would promote a personal brand because people between the ages of 18 and 25 would be able to view my work and I could help them in their journey through financial and banking issues and my brand would be seen more and associated with positivity because I would help people.

5 Little Things

Jenn’s presentation was very inspiring and informative. The first thing I learned was from her title slide. The title of the presentation was “Personal Branding: The Story of a Cloud”. I learned that it’s okay to play on your name when concerning your personal brand. I also learned that voyaging out of your comfort zone doesn’t just apply to lifestyle choices; it applies to career choices as well. In Jenn’s presentation she quoted Eleanor Roosevelt, “Do something each day that scares you.” I think that is so true. Another thing I learned is that one of the most important thing when concerning making and continuing your personal brand is that you need to make people love you. The people that you need to make love you are other people within your career field, followers, peers, people living in the same location, and people everywhere. If people love you they will follow you and your personal brand, which in turn makes your brand stronger. The fourth thing I learned is that it is important to stay relevant and consistent in your personal brand. It is also important to help people in some way with your personal brand. The fifth thing I learned is that “Good things come to those who work their asses off and never give up.” Jenn said the previous quote in her presentation and it really resonated with me. It is so true. We have to make things happen in our lives. We can’t just sit around and wait for things to happen.

Jenn and Jill: The Same Mind

To conclude, a lot of things that Jenn said are exactly what Jill has been saying all along. I think it doubles the importance. Two prominent people in the media industry, whom have both developed a personal brand, are giving us the same steps towards developing our own personal brand.

Positivity, Gratitude, and Happiness

Moments

Well here we are at the end of week two. I’ve learned so much in such a short amount of time. There were a lot of enjoyable things this week. There were a lot of inspirational things this week. There were a lot of moments that made me think twice. There were a lot of moments that were bloggable. There were a lot of moments that I learned something from. There were a lot of moments I am thankful for, especially Jill’s speech.

Jill’s Speech

Jill’s speech about how we need to craft our personal brand so people around us get the correct representation of us while looking through our social media and blogs. The three big things I got from her speech were positivity, gratitude, and happiness.

Positivity

The positivity bit is something to craft our lives around, not just our online personal brand. Nobody wants to hang around a negative Nancy. I mean at least I don’t. I hate when I get on Facebook just to cruise my newsfeed to check up on people and almost every single one of the posts are people bitching about how terrible everything in their life is. Number one it is pretty horrible to be sitting on your mom’s couch typing from your IPhone. Shut up your 14, what do you know about life being horrible. Did someone steal your crayons? Seriously. Sorry, for the rant. When people are more positive on social media (and life in general) it makes for more pleasant cruising of news feeds. It also makes that person seem nicer and cooler. But the biggest thing that being positive can lead to is inspiring somebody else. When someone reads your positive post, it can turn their day around and they in turn will be more positive.

wonka crayon meme

Gratitude

Secondly, gratitude. Gratitude and positivity go hand in hand. I have so much to be thankful for. I have so many people to be thankful for. Being grateful is important for our online personal brand nobody likes an ungrateful ass. I really liked how Scott Stratten and Jenn Cloud and the other future guest speakers took the time to talk to us. It shows that they are thankful for their followers and that in turn makes us like them even more.

Happiness

The third thing that Jill talked about was happiness. This really spoke to me because happiness is something I’ve struggled with for a long time. I was unhappy for a really long time and recently all the parts of my life fell into place. When Jill was talking about this the other day it really made me realize that she’s right about happiness. It starts with us. You choose happiness. I mean of course there are many things life will throw at you but it is you who chooses how to handle it.

It’s Okay

That moment of realization made me realize its okay to be completely happy and its okay not to have anything to bitch about. It’s okay to be positive when everyone else is negative. It’s okay to be grateful. I am so happy, grateful, and positive. I want this to translate through the rest of my life. I want my future followers to identify that with me.

laughing picture

Conclusion

As you guys probably noticed by the content of the pins I’ve been pinning Jill’s speech really resonated with me. Thank you Jill. It’s a great day to be alive!

Content Consumers vs Content Creators

Consumer of Content

In today’s society we all consume media content of some form, whether it is news, social media, applications, gaming, or other type. There are also a lot of creators of content because of the accessibility to technology and instantaneous publication.

Daily Use and Abuse of Content

I typically consume many different types of media content daily. I read the St. Louis Post Dispatch daily. I read the headlines and interesting news stories. I read the sports section. However, my favorite part of the newspaper is the cartoons. I also consume different kinds of social media such as Facebook and Twitter. I also consume a various variety of applications such as YouTube, iFunny, and FML. IFunny is a site compiled of funny videos and images. FML is a site that micro blogs FML (F my life) moment that often times leaving me laughing.

How I Consume

Most of the content I consume is via my mobile device. However, sometimes I watch YouTube videos and read my Facebook news feed via my laptop. I always read the Post-Dispatch in its best form-paper.

Type of Content

The type of content I enjoy is on both ends of the spectrum. I enjoy funny and entertaining content (iFunny, YouTube, etc.). But I also enjoy hard news and just news in general (the Post-Dispatch and Facebook).

My Contribution to Content

I contribute to the content I consume in countless ways. On social media, I comment on and like other people’s posts and post myself. On other applications, the only way I contribute is by viewing other’s work.

Learning

I learn about what’s going on in the world and in my friends and family’s lives via social media. For example, I didn’t know about the Sandy Hook School Shooting until I had seen a post about it on Facebook. I then looked up the story on a news site. I get to catch up on old friends from high school’s lives on social media as well. I can see who is getting married or having babies just by scrolling through my news feed. However, the other applications don’t really provide me with much learning, mostly enjoyment.

Creator of Content

I also am a creator of content. I create content based on my passions, thoughts, and daily life. I’m passionate about news and being funny. Through news I can educate the public and through being funny I can entertain the public. I’m also passionate about adventure, traveling, crafts, and tattoos.

underwear picture

My Contribution

I can contribute to society by generating news stories. I’ll inform them in a fresh, funny, and creative way. I’ll make the news exciting and fun to watch and/or listen to.

Enhancing My Personal Brand

My personal brand’s content will define me as a person and as a broadcast journalist. In order to enhance my online personal brand I will micro and macro blog and micro vlog funny snippets. I also want to create funny memes and images. Jenna Marbles is my inspiration for getting into vlogging. She fearless talks about all different kinds of topics and is super funny.

My Personal Niche

My niche personal brand blogging environment is a mixture of crafts and tattoos. I know, it’s really unlikely pair, but I am passionate about both. I want to help people learn new craft ideas, designs, and techniques through writing about them and posting images and videos of them. I want to help people open up the idea of tattoos in general. But I always want to help people come up with tattoo ideas and placement.

wreath picture henson tattoo picture

My Career Niche

My career personal brand is to help people learn about what is going on in society in an entertaining manner. This will help people to make decisions about their daily life and life in general.

First Week of #PBandJterm

#PBandJterm

Wow! It’s hard to believe that it’s already been a week; I feel like we just started. Yet, I also feel like we’ve learned so much. I was excited for this class before it started and it has easily become my favorite class ever. I think the most important things we’ve learned thus far is the importance of having an online personal brand-or rather a personal brand in general, important parts of a personal brand, and the first steps toward creating a personal brand.

Personal Branding

It is so important to have an online personal brand. It is the process whereby people and their careers are marked to society. These brands we are starting are going to blossom into how people will identify us in the future. I like to say it doesn’t matter what people think of me but it does. In order for me to succeed in the communications industry, people-society need to think of me in a positive light. Some people say that there is no such thing as bad publicity. I think that’s a lie. If I portray an image that is bad or a poor representation of myself it can translate into my career. It’s so important to stay clean with my image-in “real life” and online.

Uniqueness

Some important parts of a personal brand are consistency and authenticity . This is relevant to appearance, communication skills, knowledge, attitude, character, behavior, and reputation. For a personal brand to communicate the intended message the creator needs to stay consistent. If I were to be flip-floppy in my words or actions my personal brand would be compromised. Although consistency is important, I think authenticity is the most important. In order to stand out from all of the other girls pursuing a job in the communications industry I need to be authentic-I need to be myself.

Social Media

We have been taking the first steps toward creating an online personal brand. We have been building an online presence via social media sites. I think social media is very important when concerning making a brand for oneself. I know my generation is supposed to be “tech savvy and social media addicted”, but signing up for all of these social media sites has been mind boggling. On top of that, I had to clean up all of my existing social media sites. I hadn’t really thought about my online presence being something that was easily find-able, but I was wrong. In the first assignment when we had to google ourselves, my Facebook page was the first thing to pop up when my name was searched. Another challenge in the social media department was making everything say want I wanted it to communicate about me and my personal brand. I wanted to stand out so instead of my name being “Kelly Henson”, I added my middle name “Louise” to try to stand out. I want my skills and passions to be communicated as well, so I added the same synopsis about myself into the biography part of every social media site.

most interesting man meme

To conclude, this has been a fast paced first week that was full of learning, fun, and realization.

My Starting Point-

My Starting Point-

I’m Kelly Henson. I’m a Mass Communications major with an emphasis in Broadcast. I work at Waffle House. My life is Lindenwood and Waffle House.

So I googled name. I typed in ‘Kelly Louise Henson’ and the first thing that popped up with my Facebook account. I then decided to Google Imaged my name, however the results on that wasn’t as lucrative. I scrolled through several pages without finding a photo that even resembled me. It makes me a little uncomfortable that my Facebook page is the first result when my name is googled. It makes me uncomfortable because any creeper can google me and have access to my personal Facebook account. I would like to make finding me a little more difficult.
My dream career is whatever will make me happy. I want to love my job so much that I enjoy going to work every day, but more specifically something within the communications or entertainment field. I would love to be the talent for a radio or television news show. I would love being a floor director for television news show. I would also like to do stand up comedy or voices for cartoons. I am really inspired by Katie Couric and Chelsea Handler. I am inspired by Katie Couric because of all of the success she has had in the news industry. She is a household name and someday I want to be like that. I am inspired by Chelsea Handler because she has made a name for herself in the comedy industry. She has her own unique sense of humor that hasn’t changed because of the industry.

I am pretty confident with my skill level concerning communications, radio, television, and some technology. Some of these areas I am more comfortable with than others but I still feel like I can carry on an intelligent conversation with someone. The area I would consider my “area of expertise” is radio. I have been board operating (deejaying) for KCLC for over a year now. I really enjoy doing this. KCLC is also my work and learn, which makes me even more confident in my skills because I am being paid to do it. Some people seek out my expertise in radio. I have helped a couple of students become more comfortable with the board and operating it in the radio station.

My future starting today is scary. I’m scared. After j-term, I’ll be a senior. When I realized this I panicked. I’m 19 years old, I’m not ready to graduate. I decided to start taking my time with classes and take a smaller course load so I can enjoy my college experience more. I really enjoy what I study and what I do and I’m really looking forward to getting a career doing something in the communications industry but I’m scared to really become an adult. I mean of course I don’t live with my parents, I pay my own bills, and I have pulled my life together but I live in a dorm and eat in the cafeteria. I just pay Lindenwood for room, board, and utilities I don’t have to pay everything separately. I don’t know where I want to live. And I don’t have anyone I would want to move in with. College graduation is a much bigger deal than high school graduation, and it keeps creeping closer and closer and I keep getting more scared.

Here’s a link to a youtube video. It’s Chelsea Handler talking about Katie Couric.
